MEET YOUR HOSTS
Hi there!
We’re Laura and Jonny, your hosts here at The Lodge in Burniston. We’re absolutely thrilled to welcome you to our award-winning luxury cabin located on the edge of the stunning North York Moors.
Whether you’re here for a peaceful retreat, a romantic getaway, or an adventure in nature, we’ve designed every detail of The Lodge to help you relax, reconnect, and make lasting memories.
OUR STORY
How it all began…
Jonny grew up in the area, and long before we ever imagined owning the property, it had been one of his best friend’s family homes for over 30 years. In a bit of a full-circle moment, during his plumbing apprenticeship, Jonny had even fitted the boiler there.
So when the property came up for sale in 2022, we just had to take a look.
We went to view it, and the moment we turned into the driveway, we both just looked at each other and said, “wow”. The plot, tucked away in its own miniature woodland, was instantly magical.
The house itself needed a lot of love, but we could completely picture a future here. A home with space to raise a family… and in one quiet corner of the land, facing out across the field, we saw the perfect spot for something special.
That’s where the idea for The Lodge began.
With Jonny’s dad being an architect, ideas quickly turned into plans, and from the very beginning, we had one non-negotiable: no trees would be felled.
Because of that, The Lodge sits on carefully designed screw foundations, allowing it to rest lightly on the land without disturbing the roots below. Aside from trimming a few branches to nestle it into its northeast-facing position, everything around it has been left just as we found it.
Sustainability was always at the heart of the project, but so was comfort. For us, luxury is about thoughtful design, natural materials, and maximising the views and natural light with floor-to-ceiling windows.
The build took 18 months and became a real labour of love, weekends, evenings, and plenty of help from friends and family along the way (with our youngest being born right in the middle of it all!).
We welcomed our first guests in December 2024, a moment that felt pretty surreal after everything that went into it.
When you draw the curtains in the morning, the expansive windows reveal the 100-year-old trees, with the perfect spot on the deck to sit with a coffee and listen to the birds - the Adirondack chairs are a small nod to Laura’s Canadian roots.
We’re incredibly lucky to be based right on the edge of the North York Moors, just a short drive from the coast, with places like Robin Hood’s Bay, Whitby and Scarborough all within easy reach. For us, it’s the best of both worlds, tucked between the wild moorland and the Yorkshire coastline we love so much.
We’re also proud to be the official caretakers of a five-mile stretch of the Cleveland Way, from Scalby Mills to Hayburn Wyke, which reflects how much we care about preserving and looking after this special landscape.
We can’t wait to welcome you, and we hope you love The Lodge and this special corner of the coast and moors as much as we do.
