SUSTAINABILITY
At The Lodge, we are committed to providing a luxurious yet eco-conscious retreat. Every aspect of our design and daily operations is guided by sustainability, ensuring a minimal ecological footprint without compromising comfort.
Thoughtful Design & Materials
Entirely British-made – Designed by a North Yorkshire architect and hand-built on-site.
Sustainably sourced British timber – The Lodge is clad in durable, locally grown larch.
Minimal impact foundations – Instead of a concrete base, we use screw foundations to protect the land.
Well-insulated – High-performance insulation in the floor, walls, and ceilings reduces energy waste.
Double-glazed aluminium windows – Improving heat retention and efficiency.
Eco-Friendly Comfort & Amenities
Water conservation – A shower-only setup reduces water usage.
Rainwater harvesting – All roof rainwater is collected for watering our plants.
On-site composting – All green and food waste is composted to enrich our soil.
Sustainable, refillable toiletries – We provide eco-friendly, vegan, British-made toiletries in refillable containers to reduce plastic waste.
Who Gives A Crap toilet paper – 100% recycled, sustainable, and socially responsible.
Five-star eco-friendly bedding – Our duvets and pillows are handcrafted in the UK and made from recycled materials for a luxurious down-like feel.
Locally roasted coffee & Yorkshire Tea – Enjoy freshly roasted coffee from Three Ridings Coffee and a proper brew with Yorkshire Tea, supporting local businesses while reducing food miles.
Efficient dishwashing – A dishwasher helps conserve water compared to handwashing.
Eco-friendly cleaning products – We only use biodegradable, non-toxic cleaning products to protect both guests and the environment.
Full recycling – Guests are encouraged to separate waste with dedicated recycling bins.
Line-dried linens & towels – Whenever possible, we dry linens naturally to reduce energy use.
Locally Sourced & Upcycled Interiors
Sustainable décor – Our interior features a mix of locally sourced, second-hand, and vintage furnishings, reducing waste and supporting local businesses.
Books, games, and artwork – Carefully curated from second-hand sources or local artists.
Indoor plants – Adding natural beauty while improving air quality.
A Self-Sustaining Ecosystem
Organic vegetable garden & small orchard – Providing fresh, homegrown produce.
Honeybees & bird feeders – Supporting pollinators and local wildlife.
Locally sourced firewood & furniture – The wood for our firepit and the shelves in The Lodge come directly from our land, ensuring zero carbon footprint.
Green Energy & Smart Living
100% Renewable Electricity – Our power comes from Octopus Energy, the UK’s greenest supplier, offering 100% renewable electricity from wind, solar, and hydro projects. Octopus also invests heavily in expanding renewable energy generation, helping to drive a cleaner future.
Energy-efficient lighting & smart controls – The Lodge is fitted with low-energy LED lighting, a smart thermostat for efficient heating control, and outdoor motion-sensor lights to minimize unnecessary energy use.
The Lodge is accessible via local bus routes (x93/x94) connecting Burniston with nearby towns and attractions. Choosing public transport helps reduce emissions while allowing you to enjoy the scenery without the stress of driving.
We warmly welcome cyclists and support low-impact travel:
Safe, secure space to store bicycles
Access to local cycling routes suitable for a range of abilities
Ideal location for exploring the North Yorkshire coast and countryside on two wheels
