The Lodge sits between the Yorkshire Coast and the North York Moors, with clifftop walks, quiet coves, old fishing villages and miles of open countryside within easy reach.
Walk from the door, spend the day by the sea or head across the moors. There’s plenty to discover, without having to travel far.
From the door.
Walk the Cleveland Way//
Join the Cleveland Way from Burniston and follow the clifftops north towards Hayburn Wyke and Ravenscar. Expect huge coastal views, woodland, waterfalls and the occasional seal below.
Follow the Cinder Track//
Walk or cycle the old Scarborough to Whitby railway line, heading south towards Scarborough or north through Cloughton and onwards towards Ravenscar, Robin Hood’s Bay and Whitby.
Walk to the pub//
Two village pubs are around five minutes away on foot, perfect for leaving the car behind and heading out for dinner or a pint.
Regular buses also run through Burniston towards Scarborough and Whitby (X93/X94).
Coast.
Robin Hood’s Bay//
Lose a few hours among the cobbled lanes and old fishermen’s cottages before making your way down to the sea. The village also sits on both the Cleveland Way and Cinder Track.
Boggle Hole//
Follow the coast south from Robin Hood’s Bay to this little cove for rock pools, fossils and a stop at the wonderfully tucked-away YHA café. Always check the tide before walking along the beach.
Whitby//
Climb the 199 steps, explore the abbey ruins and wander the old streets around the harbour.
Scarborough North Bay//
Our nearest stretch of sandy beach. Walk the promenade, swim in the sea or carry on north towards Scalby Mills and the Cleveland Way.
Hayburn Wyke//
One of our favourite walks. Follow the coast north before dropping through woodland to a secluded rocky cove and waterfall.
Moor.
The North York Moors National Park begins just minutes from The Lodge, where ancient woodland gives way to heather-covered moorland and a wild stretch of Yorkshire coastline.
Walk//
Head inland for open moorland, deep dales, waterfalls and miles of footpaths, or stay by the sea and follow the clifftops towards Ravenscar.
Wildlife//
Take the binoculars from The Lodge and look out for roe deer, birds of prey and seabirds, with seals often spotted along the coast.
Dark skies//
Stay out after sunset. Away from the lights of the towns, clear nights across the moors can be spectacular for stargazing.
Go by steam//
See the landscape from the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, travelling through the national park between Pickering and Grosmont, with selected services continuing to Whitby.
Eat & drink.
We'd always rather recommend a handful of places we genuinely love than give you an enormous list.
Close to home//
The Oak Wheel and Three Jolly Sailors are both in Burniston and within walking distance of The Lodge.
For dinner//
Head to The Plough in neighbouring Scalby for good food in a lovely village setting.
After a coastal walk//
Stop at Hayburn Wyke Inn before heading back towards Burniston.
For pizza + a pint//
Whitby Brewery sits beneath the abbey ruins and makes a brilliant stop after exploring Whitby.
For something special//
The Homestead Kitchen, Goathland, for relaxed fine dining rooted in the produce and landscape of the North York Moors, or The Waterside at Chainbridge, Ruswarp, for seasonal food in a beautiful riverside setting.
