The Homestead Kitchen, Goathland

EAT

Hidden away in the moorland village of Goathland, The Homestead Kitchen is a Michelin-starred restaurant set within a converted 18th-century farmhouse.

Awarded its Michelin star in 2025, The Homestead brings together relaxed fine dining, produce from its kitchen garden and ingredients rooted in the North York Moors and Yorkshire coast. It feels special without feeling stuffy — exactly the sort of place we love recommending to guests at The Lodge.

Michelin-starred, but wonderfully relaxed //

This is part of what makes The Homestead so good.

There’s serious cooking behind the food, but the experience remains intimate and connected to its surroundings. Seasonal produce, North Sea fish, locally reared meat, Yorkshire cheeses and ingredients grown in the garden all find their way onto the menu.

Come for lunch after a walk through Goathland, or book dinner and make it the reason for heading into the moors.

From garden to table //

The Homestead's menus change with the seasons, with much of the inspiration coming from what is growing outside.

Expect beautifully considered dishes built around Yorkshire produce, from North Sea fish and locally reared meat to vegetables, herbs and fruit grown in their own garden. Even the bread has a sense of place: their signature moorland stottie is currently served with Hartlepool kipper butter and a caramelised local cheese fondue.

This isn't somewhere we'd rush through. Come for lunch, order something good to drink and make an afternoon of it.

What to book //

There are several ways to experience The Homestead.

For something relatively relaxed, the set lunch is particularly tempting, while the à la carte menu makes a lovely dinner. For a proper occasion, there's also a chef's tasting menu.

At the time of writing, the set lunch is £35 for two courses or £40 for three, while the chef's tasting menu is £95 per person. Menus change regularly, so we'd always check what's being served when you book.

Sunday lunch is another very good excuse to head into the moors, with a changing three-course menu currently priced at £50.

Make a day of Goathland //

Don't just drive there for lunch.

Goathland is surrounded by some of our favourite North York Moors scenery, so this is an easy one to turn into a full day from The Lodge.

Walk down through the wooded gorge to Mallyan Spout waterfall, wander through the village or head towards the railway station, famous for appearing as Hogsmeade in the first Harry Potter film. The North York Moors National Park also suggests the Rail Trail from Goathland towards Beck Hole and Grosmont.

Then finish with a long lunch at The Homestead.

Waterfall. Moorland. Lunch. Back to the coast.

Our kind of day.

From The Lodge //

Goathland sits inland from Whitby in the heart of the North York Moors, making The Homestead a lovely contrast to a few days spent exploring the coast.

We'd pair it with our Mallyan Spout walk, then book lunch afterwards. Muddy boots off, something good to eat, then back across the moors to Burniston for a quiet evening at The Lodge.
