Three pubs near The Lodge
One of the nicest things about staying at The Lodge is that you can be tucked away amongst the trees without being miles from anywhere.
Burniston has two proper village pubs within walking distance, and another of our favourites is just down the road in Scalby.
So whether you want steak pie and a pint after a long walk, somewhere for Sunday lunch or a slightly smarter dinner, these are three places we'd recommend.
The Oak Wheel //
A traditional, family-run village pub on Coastal Road in Burniston, with home-cooked food, cask ales and a daily specials board. There's an open fire in winter and a garden for warmer days.
It's the sort of place we'd choose when you want an easy pub dinner without making an evening of getting there.
From The Lodge // A few minutes' walk
Good for // Traditional pub food + a relaxed drink
Our pick // Pork belly or Sunday lunch
The Three Jolly Sailors //
The Jolly's is another Burniston institution and a wonderfully traditional Grade II-listed pub in the heart of the village. Its menu is unapologetically pub food: steak pie, Whitby scampi, burgers, stone-baked pizzas and proper homemade puddings.
The steak pie is something of a local legend — so much so that the new publicans have specifically promised not to change the recipe.
It's also particularly handy after walking the Cleveland Way or Cinder Track, both of which pass close to the village.
From The Lodge // A few minutes' walk
Good for // Proper pub food + generous portions
Order // The steak pie
The Plough, Scalby //
For something a little more polished, head into neighbouring Scalby.
The Plough sits on the High Street in the old village and feels somewhere between a country pub and restaurant. The kitchen focuses on modern British food using fresh, seasonal Yorkshire ingredients, alongside pub classics, market fish and Sunday roasts.
It's the one we'd choose for a date night or when dinner is part of the occasion rather than simply somewhere to eat.
From The Lodge // 2-min drive or bus ride or 25 min walk
Good for // Date night + Sunday lunch
Don't miss // The specials board + Bakewell Tart Cocktail

The Oak Wheel, a traditional Yorkshire village pub in Burniston, a short walk from The Lodge.
Leave the car behind //
This is perhaps the best bit.
For The Oak Wheel and Three Jolly Sailors, you don't need to get back in the car after a day exploring the coast. Walk into the village, have dinner and a couple of drinks, then wander back to your cabin.
For The Plough, we'd book a taxi and make an evening of it.
Our pick //
For a pint + proper pub dinner // Three Jolly Sailors
For an easy walk from The Lodge // The Oak Wheel
For date night // The Plough
Three different pubs. Three different reasons to go.
And all close enough that dinner doesn't need to involve another expedition across North Yorkshire.
